Return to the Tony Bennett intro page

Date: ca. 1946

Lin Areson (con), George Masso (a), 314th Infantry Band (acc), Tony Bennett (v)

a.   St. James Infirmary  (Joe Primrose)

Date: ca. April 1949
Location: New York

Tony Bennett (ldr), Tony Bennett (v)

a.   Fascinating Rhythm  (George Gershwin, Ira Gershwin)
b.   Vieni Qui  (George Simon)

Anthony Bennedetto's first known recording used his first stage name, Joe Bari, before Bob Hope helped him to devise the more natural "Tony Bennett." Both songs were issued on a 78 (number unknown) issued by Leslie Records, a firm owned by George Simon, who also wrote the second song. According to the 1968 profile of Tony Bennett in Billboard, the only known copy of this disc literally disintegrated at some point in the 1960s.

But, since this discography was first published, a copy of this record has been found. See the intro to the discography for more info.

Date: ca. October 1949
Location: New York

Tony Bennett (ldr), Tony Tamburello (a, p), Tony Bennett (v)

a.   Boulevard Of Broken Dreams  (Harry Warren, Al Dubin)
b.   Crazy Rhythm  (Joseph Meyer, Irving Caesar, Roger Wolfe Kahn)

This was the legendary "Tony Bennett demo disc" which inspired Mitch Miller to sign Bennett to Columbia Records. According to the late Tony Tamburello, several copies of the 78 rpm demo (never officially issued) existed into the 1990s, possibly among Mr. Tamburello's effects.

The Columbia session sheets state that Bennett recorded all four tunes on this date. However, the playback acetates from the session indicate that BOULEVARD OF BROKEN DREAMS and I WANNA BE LOVED were attempted on April 17, 1950, but actually finished on April 20. It's likely that the orchestra backgrounds for those two tunes were done on the 17th and that Bennett's vocals were not added until three days later.

It's not known if any musicians were present on this date or if Bennett was simply singing on top of previously-recorded instrumental backings.

See note for April 17, 1950, session above. This session, April 20, isn't listed in any of Columbia's paperwork, quite possibly because "tracking" (or overdubbing) wasn't permitted by the musician's union at this time. (Note that this was the same month that Sinatra recorded his all-overdubbed album with Mitch Miller.)
